Understanding ATP testing for cleaning verification
What ATP testing measures, when it is useful, and how it supports documented sanitation in workplaces and commercial settings.

ATP testing is a method of measuring biological residue on surfaces. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, a molecule found in all living cells. The test uses a swab and a handheld luminometer to detect how much organic material remains after cleaning.
The test does not identify specific bacteria or viruses. Instead, it gives a general reading of how clean a surface is from a biological perspective. A low reading means the surface is effectively free of organic residue. A high reading suggests further cleaning is needed.
ATP testing is most useful in settings where documented sanitation matters: offices after illness outbreaks, food preparation areas, healthcare settings, and workplaces where staff or customers need confidence that cleaning has been effective.
The process is quick. A technician swabs a representative area, inserts the swab into the device, and gets a reading within seconds. Multiple areas can be tested to give a picture of sanitation across a whole room or building.
Results are usually expressed as a relative light unit (RLU) score. Lower scores mean cleaner surfaces. Acceptable thresholds vary by industry and surface type, but the important point is that testing provides an objective baseline.
ATP testing is not a replacement for proper cleaning. It is a verification tool that confirms cleaning has been carried out effectively. If the reading is high, the area needs to be cleaned again.
For businesses, ATP testing provides documented evidence of sanitation practices. This can support compliance records, staff reassurance and customer confidence.
If you are considering ATP testing for your workplace, discuss your needs with the cleaning provider. They can advise on which areas to test, how often to test, and what documentation you will receive.
