Preparing a property for professional environmental cleaning

Simple steps to take before the cleaning team arrives, to help the work proceed smoothly and safely.

When you have booked a professional environmental cleaning service, a small amount of preparation can make the work faster, safer and more effective.

First, ensure clear access to the affected areas. Move vehicles from driveways, unlock gates and doors, and clear any obstacles that might block equipment or waste removal.

If there are pets in the property, make arrangements for them to be kept away from the work area. Cleaning chemicals, equipment noise and unfamiliar people can be stressful for animals.

Secure valuables and personal items. While professional teams are trustworthy, it is good practice to remove jewellery, cash and small valuables from the work area before the team arrives.

If the property has utilities that need to be on, confirm this in advance. Most cleaning teams need running water and electricity. If the property is vacant, make sure these are accessible.

If you have specific instructions or concerns, write them down or discuss them when booking. Include any rooms that should not be entered, access restrictions, or timing requirements that matter for the visit.

For biohazard or trauma work, do not attempt to clean the area yourself before the professionals arrive. This can spread contamination and make the professional work more difficult.

After the work is complete, walk through the property with the team leader if possible. Ask questions about what was done, what to avoid for the next few hours, and whether any follow-up is recommended.
